About Me

My photo
In June 2011 I moved to Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa with the view of staying for one year. More than two years later and I have four beautiful Tanzanian foster children and there is no sign of me moving back to the UK. This blog was created as a way for family and friends to keep up to date on our life here and to see my little ones growing up, feel free to take a read and leave your comments. To find out about the work I am doing here visit www.tauf.org.uk (under construction).

A Terrible Accident

January 6th as just a normal day, like any other, Benny (my guard) asked if he could go out to town to run an errand, of course I did not mind. Shortly after he left I received a phone call from an unknown number but it was all in Swahili and I didn't really understand, a short while later Mary called me and she sounded in a terrible panic, she was on her way to the hospital because Benny had been in an accident. I quickly called Ina & Erick who came round immediately, Ina stayed to look after the kids since Dad was out playing golf with his phone off and Erick took me up to the hospital.
Being discharged

After a very long night at the hospital we found out the following, Benny was a passenger on the back of a motorbike, a lorry smashed into them, the driver had suffered severe head injuries and Benny had a terrible injury to his leg, that evening Benny had surgery and was sent on the ward.

In the end it turned out that we had to move Benny to a private hospital because he had not had his bandages changed for four days and I was very concerned he would get a terrible infection and possibly even lose his leg. Sadly it turned out that ten days after the accident the driver died, his injuries were just too severe.

Benny has now been discharged from the hospital and is staying with us in the house, I am so very thankful to my friend Dolly who has agreed to come in daily to change Benny's dressings to ensure that infection does not set in, she is saving us an absolute fortune in medical bills, thank-you Dolly.

Benny has a long road to recovery ahead but in the beginning we feared for his life, now we know he is going to be ok if a little scarred.

I haven't actually got any pictures of Benny but below are pictures of Mary & I giving blood for him :)
