About Me

My photo
In June 2011 I moved to Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa with the view of staying for one year. More than two years later and I have four beautiful Tanzanian foster children and there is no sign of me moving back to the UK. This blog was created as a way for family and friends to keep up to date on our life here and to see my little ones growing up, feel free to take a read and leave your comments. Settling in with Tantrums!!

Selemani is definitely settling in well, the tantrums have started...! The first two weeks he was so well behaved but now he has a big tantrum almost everyday. That is to be expected though as he settles in and learns what I will and will not tolerate, like any child he will see how far he can push me!! I am being quite strict, for his and my sake, we are using the naughty corner and one time he went to bed with no ice-cream for dessert another time he went to bed with no story. I feel if I start as I mean to go on and am consistent then there will be no confusion in the future. After being in the naughty corner he must apologise to me and the other day he gave me a big cuddle and kiss when he said sorry!! Also when children are two they have what is known as 'terrible twos' this is usually down to frustration because they do not have the vocabulary to be able to express what they want. I think Selemani is in a similar situation, he knows what he wants and he understands me but he does not yet have the English to tell me what he wants and I do not have the Swahili to understand him. I hope in time this will get better.
He is doing well though and also learning, he is starting to take himself off to play, though he never goes far but I love hearing him talking to himself as he pushes a car around the room.
At Cradle he is becoming more and more confident at moving away from me and playing with the children but more so he interacts with the staff. Thursday he went for a walk with Mama Musa, also yesterday Beth took him to buy bananas then they cooked cakes together.
The other day I caught him and Justin, our wonderful guard, having tea together, he will often go off and help Justin like last week they were watering the flowers. It is great that he has such a lovely male role model around.
I am so pleased he is settling in well and I am glad he is beginning to interact with other people. I just hope the tantrums don't last too long!!

  1. Awww, that is a great picture of Sele and Justin together! Tell Justin hi from me if you think of it when you see him :) Glad your son is settling in as well as possible with the language barrier.
