About Me

My photo
In June 2011 I moved to Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa with the view of staying for one year. More than two years later and I have four beautiful Tanzanian foster children and there is no sign of me moving back to the UK. This blog was created as a way for family and friends to keep up to date on our life here and to see my little ones growing up, feel free to take a read and leave your comments. To find out about the work I am doing here visit www.tauf.org.uk (under construction).

The Forgotten Post

Some weeks ago there was an incident which I wanted to report on my blog but forgot.

It started on a dark night when I walked in to my bedroom and next to my bed there was a bug...! Not just any bug though, it was a VERY big bug, of course as soon as I turned on the light it ran under my bed and could I find it, NO?!?!

I moved the mattress onto the dining room floor, of course I didn't want to sleep with that thing, just as I was in my room moving Helen and my blanket I heard rustling within the plastic bags and upon further investigation I saw it again, that VERY big bug. It ran and it ran and it ran, behind the shelf, across the wall, up the curtains, in the window frame, all the while I was chasing it with a great big can of bug spray whilst of course screaming.

It stopped on top of the curtain rail, I stood as far away as possible, aimed and shot at it, it fell to the ground and ran...where to I am not sure, obviously it was going to take more than bug spray to get rid of this creature, so I called in the big man!!

Outside my house, unaware of the goings on sat my guard, I flung open the door and in my limited Swahili I said 'Kubwa Pepe, Kubwa Pepe' (Big bug) whilst gesturing for him to come inside. The look on his face was a picture, 'why is this crazy lady calling me in for a 'Kubwa Pepe?'

He obliged however and came into my bedroom and began the search for the BIG bug, eventually he located it and laughed!! The thing that concerned me though was that this great big, tough, Masai Man didn't seem to want to touch the bug, he used his stick to push it all the way to the front door and then it was gone so I could sleep peacefully.

Ashinalin Larousi (Asante sana in Massai) Larousi is my guards name.

I should have taken a photo of it but at the time it didn't cross my mind so I have found one on google, although I know it isn't this bug it was very similar...
By the time the bug was gone I had used half a can of bug spray so there is no way mine and Helen's lungs would have appreciated sleeping in there so we stayed on the floor in the dining room!
