About Me

My photo
In June 2011 I moved to Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa with the view of staying for one year. More than two years later and I have four beautiful Tanzanian foster children and there is no sign of me moving back to the UK. This blog was created as a way for family and friends to keep up to date on our life here and to see my little ones growing up, feel free to take a read and leave your comments. To find out about the work I am doing here visit www.tauf.org.uk (under construction).

The Giant Matunda (Fruit)

There is a restaurant in town where many Mzungus 'White People' spend their Saturdays, I am one of these people, not all the time but often. A very clever fruit seller has taken advantage of this, he sits outside on a Saturday afternoon selling his fruit and he often has fruit which no one else sells. On this occasion he had these fruits (above) what are they? you might be asking, well that is exactly what I was asking too, 'Grapefruits' was the mans reply. Well that got me all excited, imagining peeling it to reveal a huge grapefruit BUT when I did peel it I was quite disappointed, the fruit was the same size as most we would get at home, the only difference was the amount of rind as you can see below!! and guess what...it didn't even taste that good so I was well and truly disappointed!!

B checking out her new ride
The other day Michael was at a jumble sale when he stumbled upon this pushchair, or stroller so many of my American friends have corrected me. He phoned me and asked if I was in need of a stroller and I said yes, well B is going to be small for quite some time I think. I told him not to pay any more than 200,000tzs for it, well when I collected it from him that afternoon he had indeed payed 80,000tzs which is around $50, this same pushchair sells for around $400 in the States so it is truly a great bargain. Admittedly we don't use it often but in the times we have used it it has been a back saver :-)
